Gabriella Maralngurra started her artistic apprenticeship at a young age, sitting with her grandfather the late Lofty Nadjamerrek AO at Kamarrkawan and Kabulwarnamyo outstations. He showed her the country, Dreamings and practical skills like cutting bark for painting. Her style, with its parallel rarrk (hatching) in the old rock art style, reflects his influence and that of her father Gabriel Maralngurra. However her figures have an expressive and sensitive character all of their own. Gabriel Maralngurra’s mother is June Nadjamerrek, and her brother Maath is an emerging artist also working within his grandfather’s school.
