Mankodjbang (Water Peanuts)

Mankodjbang (water peanuts, Aponogeton elongatus) are a carbohydrate food for us Bininj people. We find them in rivers where the water moves slowly. Women go and get mankodjbang in Bangkerreng (the late wet season). People used to cook them in the coals of the fire, but nowadays we cook them in billy cans.

Mankodjbang makka manme ngadberre ngarringun nawu ngad bininj ngarrikukburlerri. Mankodjbang karringalke karrimang kore kukabo bu kukku kabongurdme. Daluhdaluk kabirrire kabirrimang mankodjbang bu Bangkerreng kayimerran. Kohbakohbanj korroko birrimangi birriwilkdengi kore kunak kuwilk. Dja bolkkime karrikinje kore banikkin.
