Kurndamen (Creation of the Frill Necked Lizard)

This is the story of how kurndamen (frill neck lizard) was created.
In the dreamtime, a men’s ceremony was taking place in a sacred place in the western Arnhem region. A young boy was misbehaving and disrespecting the elders by ignoring their pleas for him to be quiet and settle down. He kept disrupting the ceremony and received several warnings. Finally the elders decided to teach the young boy a lesson. They stretched his ears around to the back of his head to make him listen, creating a frill, and gave him an ugly scrawny body to shame him. In doing this, they created kurndamen, the frill necked lizard. This is why whenever you see kurndamen, he will try and hide from you because he is embarrassed by his own image.
In the wet season, kundermen has to be very careful because Namarrkon (Lightning Man) tries to punish him by throwing lightning at the trees he hides in. Namarrkon is the keeper of traditional laws.
