Bulukkurri (Eel) dja Burrar (Water Monitor)

Bulukkurri (the freshwater eel) is like a snake, and it will bite us. But we won’t die from the bite. Eels can be found in the water, amongst weeds, or in the mud. It eats little animals and fish. The Old People would always wade into the water and search around for File Snakes with their hands. If they saw an eel, they’d pick it up and throw it away.
The eels commonly found in Western Arnhem Land are Synbranchus bengalensis and Ophisternon gutterale.
