This is a story from Malyakarnak near Wulwunj (Mt Borrodaile). A man called Marrurda, a marrkidjbu (sorcerer) lived at a nearby place called Maburludu with his two little nephews. First thing in the morning, Marrurda said to them “Go and hunt for some Kangaroo for us! Or anything you see, just spear it”. But the two little nephews were only learning to hunt, and at the end of the day they came back empty handed. So Marrurda said to them “We’ll stay one more night, and hunt again in the morning”.
The next day when the two went out, they saw a big dog. They didn’t know, but the dog’s name was Malyakarnak, and Marrurda had named it after that country. It was his dog. They speared the dog, and went to make a fire to cook it in a ground oven. They went home, and gave out the meat piece by piece to the people at Maburludu and Wilka. They didn’t know what the meat was, and ate it thinking it might be kunj (kangaroo) or ngurrurdu (emu).
When night fell, Marrurda started calling out his dog’s name. The people there saw him walking around with a burning torch, calling out. They realised that the meat they had eaten might have been his dog. So a group of people went and told Marrurda what they thought – that his two nephews had killed the dog and given them the meat.
So Marrurda and his nephews had to do Marnayak. This is a justice practice, whereby the two parties will stand some distance from each other with spears, each taking turns to throw a spear at the other, who will run back and forth trying to dodge it. The two nephews missed, but Marrurda hit his marks. He told the two lines of people, lined up on either side of the field, to leave the nephews there until morning to die. And in the morning, they saw marram, the whistling kite, and wakwak the crow, circling over where they lay.
After that, Marrurda took his barrawu (shovel-nosed spear), djalakirradj (fishing spear) and djerrh (dilly bag) and went back to his mother country, Wamba Warddedadjeng (which means “The Shark Split the Sandstone”).
