Burarr Djang (Water Goanna Dreaming from Mankorlod)

$396.00

The artist has painted a story from Mankorlod, north east of Gunbalanya. The place is an increase site for ngalng which are large, dark green freshwater yabbies.
The spirit presiding over the place is Namurrungkidj. Namurrungkidj looks after the crustaceans and ensures that they remain plentiful. In the Dreamtime there were two ceremony men – a father and son. They trvelled from Croker Island, naming the landforms all the way to Katherine Gorge. They lived here and there, teaching people ceremony. Their footprints can be seen at Mankorlod in the stone country they walked over. They turned around to travelled back to Croker Island. In exhaustion they changed into Burarr or water goannas. One Burarr continued on the return journey. He was really fat and turned into stone at Bilwoyinj near Mankorlod.
