Bruce Nabegeyo was born in the bush at Makanarlarl – Mungung, south of Mount Borradaile, and north of Oenpelli. Nabegeyo went to school in Oenpelli and lived there for most of his life. He was taught to paint by his father Billiago Nabegeyo, a renowned artist. When he was about twelve, Bruce learnt to grind ochre and paint on bark. The Nabegeyo family is highly artistic, with Bruce’s brother Mukguddu and son Elijah both accomplished artists. Bruce’s father’s country is Mandilbareng and his mother’s is Mumeka. Bruce was a great narrative painter and tended to work alone on his paintings. Bruce traveled to Darwin on numerous occasions for the openings of exhibitions. He was a senior ceremony man and songman and fulfilled his cultural responsibilities dutifully and with dedication. He passed away in June 2009 and is survived by his wife and two children.
