Yirrkku (the Australian water rat, Hydromys Chrysogaster) lives in the water and finds its prey there. It eats wakih (freshwater shrimp), small fish like dilebang (rainbowfish) and any other animals which die and rot in the water. We see yirrkku in lots of different areas, hunting at night or even in rivers and billabongs at daytime. We don’t hunt yirrku these days, it’s not very good eating. Perhaps the Old People used to eat it sometimes.
