Namarrkon, Lightning Man is an important ancestral being in the mythology of the Kunwinjku people of western Arnhem Land. This spirit helped create the country during the Dreamtime. Namarrkon creates thunder by throwing stone axes down onto the earth.

His wife is known as Barrkinj, and is most famously depicted in the Anbangbang shelter at Nourlangie. In the Gundjeihmi language of that area, her name is spelt Barrginj. She and Namarrkon are the parents of Aldjurr, the Leichhardt’s Grasshopper (Petasida ephippigera) which appears with the first storms of the year.
